Exchange Online - IMAP & SMTP connections

If you are using an email client other than Microsoft Outlook, you may need to manually configure the connection settings when adding your mailbox. For Thunderbird, see our complete guide.

You must first submit an IT Support request to have SMTP Authentication enabled on your account. Without that, you will be unable to send mail using your mail client

Configure your mail client with the following settings:

  • Incoming
    • Protocol: IMAP
    • Server: outlook.office365.com
    • Port: 993
    • SSL: SSL/TLS
    • Authentication: OAuth2
    • Username: <username>@unbc.ca
  • Outgoing
    • Server: smtp.office365.com
    • Port: 587
    • SSL: STARTTLS
    • Authentication: OAuth2
    • Username: <username>@unbc.ca

There have been some reports of problems with OAuth2 authentication and IPv6. If you are having trouble connecting with your email client, try disabling IPv6, either for your entire system or just within your email client (if that is an option).
