UNBC makes the commitment to stay compliant with ever evolving security standards. Some MFA methods such as SMS, are being depreciated in February 2027 and we want to begin moving people to more modern MFA methods.
Option 1: Phishing Resistant MFA via PIN / Facial Recognition
Phishing Resistant MFA can be achieved via the Windows Hello service, Microsoft Authenticator Passkeys or via a hardware key like YubiKey.
PIN: a 4 digit numerical value you are prompted to enter.
- If you are given a UNBC computer asset, you will be able to register for this method.
Facial Recognition: Devices with a camera will detect your face, to automatically log you in.

Microsoft Authenticator Passkey: Scan a QR code with your Microsoft Authenticator
- If you have a smartphone with a camera, you will be able to register for this method within the Microsoft Authenticator App

Option 2: Passwordless MFA

Changing your Primary MFA Method:
If you have another method registered, you may not be using a Passwordless MFA method even if it registered. You may have to update your preferred method. This is done via https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info
Select "Change" to change your preferred method, or delete your other methods.
