Encrypting portable storage with BitLocker

What is BitLocker?

BitLocker is the Windows encryption technology that is included with certain newer versions of Windows. BitLocker enables users to encrypt all of the data on the drive that Windows is installed on, preventing theft or unauthorized access.

How long does the encryption take?

The time will vary depending on the size and performance of your portable hard drive. This procedure can take up to a few hours.

Can I shutdown my computer before the encryption process is finished?

Yes, you can turn off your  computer at any time while it is encrypting, the procedure will resume after you turn it back on.

How to encrypt your portable storage with BitLocker.

1) Insert your portable storage into your computer.

2) Right click on the drive and select Turn on BitLocker.

3) BitLocker will start up, wait until it prompts you.

4) Choose a password that you’ll use to unlock the drive when you want to use it.

Note: ITS recommends setting passwords that are a minimum of 12 characters, including at least one digit and at least one special characters.

A password's likelihood of being "guessed" by an unauthorised user will decrease the longer and more complex it is.

5) Save or print the recovery key.

Note: The recovery key can be used to unlock the device if you forget the password. Do not lose the recovery key.

6) Select an option and click Next to begin encrypting your drive.

7) Select Start Encrypting.

8) A status window will appear that shows the drive encryption process, it may take several hours.
