The University of Northern British Columbia offers Wireless Internet access, along with additional online tools to the entire campus. Wireless networking allows UNBC faculty, staff, students, and guests to access our network resources. Depending on where you are on campus, one or more of the wireless network IDs listed below should be accessible:

Wireless Networks

UNBC has several Wireless Networks, the following gives a brief description for each and describes its recommended use:

UNBC - This network is intended for all UNBC Students, Staff and Faculty. This WiFi network allows similar access to systems that are plugged into a wall port in most offices.

  • Requires a UNBC user name and password

eduroam - This network can be used by people visiting UNBC, or any member institution of eduroam (https://eduroam.org/). This WiFi network has access to the Internet.

  • When connecting you will need to use an email address provided by your institution in the username field, and your institutional password in the password field. 

UNBC-Guest Sign-up - This is an open self-service network. Connect to this network to sign up for a password to the UNBC-Guest network. There is no additional access on this network.

  • This network does not require a password.

UNBC-Guest - This network is for guests to UNBC, and grants access to the Internet.

  • To connect to this network you will need to go through UNBC Guest Sign-up prior to connecting to UNBC-Guest.

  • This network only requires a password. That password will be sent to the email address in the form you filled out when you connected to the guest sign up.

UNBC-RESNET - Residential network permits multiple devices the ability to talk with each other, as well as permitting them access to the Internet.

  • This network only requires a password.

  • Devices can only connect to other devices which are using the same password.

UNBC-PCG - Special research network.

  • Access to this network is restricted.

Connecting to the UNBC WiFi:

When connecting to the WiFi on UNBC campus we look for a few settings to be correct: 

  • EAP method set to PEAP 

  • Phase 2 authentication set to MSChapV2 

  • CA certificate set to “None” or “Do not Validate”; on some newer machines you will have to select “Use system certificates” and then select “None/Do not Validate”.

  • In some cases, the system will ask for a Domain to be entered. Please enter unbc.ca into the Domain field.

After those settings are correct, you will have to enter in your UNBC username in the username field, and your UNBC password in the password field. 

Connecting to the eduroam WiFi: 

eduroam is a collaborative network that allows students, staff, and faculty to access the Internet via encrypted wireless services at cooperating institutions, without the need for obtaining a guest account. eduroam allows a user visiting another institution to login using the same credentials they would at their home campus. Note: You don't have to connect at UNBC first to access this network.

After those settings are correct, you will have to enter in your UNBC username@unbc.ca in the Identity/Username field, and your UNBC password in the Password field. 

 

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What are my login credentials? 

  • Enter your username@unbc.ca, along with your password. If you don't remember your UNBC credentials you can retrieve/reset them via https://password.unbc.ca. If you still require assistance, please contact the IT Service Desk: hours and location are available on our Support Portal.

What do I do when my phone or computer can't access WiFi? 

  • Verify that the device's WiFi is enabled or turned on. This could be a mechanical switch on the side or front of some laptops.
  • Ensure that your device is fully up to date.

Can I use the eduroam network while I'm at UNBC?

  • It is preferable to use the UNBC WiFi network while at UNBC, as it is the primary wireless network on campus and provides direct access to internal resources, whereas eduroam does not.

What happens when my device is asking me to trust a certificate? 

  • You have to trust the certificate in order to connect.
